MLAX : Drew appears in court, still receiving counseling for drinking problem
Syracuse men’s lacrosse player Kevin Drew is continuing substance abuse counseling for a drinking problem after being arrested for driving while intoxicated last October.
Drew, a senior midfielder, appeared in City Court before Judge Vanessa Bogan on Tuesday to report his progress in his criminal case, according to an article published by The Post-Standard on Tuesday.
Drew was arrested on Oct. 24 after driving SU head coach John Desko’s car into a parked car, leading the police on a chase and refusing to cooperate with the police. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, resisting arrest and numerous traffic violations.
Gary Sommer, Drew’s defense lawyer, said Tuesday that the 21-year-old Drew has been sober since being arrested in October, according to the article. Sommer also requested for more time for Drew to finish his substance abuse counseling, according to the article.
Drew was suspended from the lacrosse team the day after his arrest and withdrew from the university before returning to school and the team for spring practice in January. After sitting out the first two games of the season, Drew played in the Orange’s last 12 games, registering five goals and three assists.
Sommer said he is working with the prosecution to determine whether any sentence will include probation for Drew and to resolve restitution issues, according to the article.
Bogan adjourned the case to June 5 for another status report, according to the article.
