Howie Hawkins

Persistence appears to be key for Howie Hawkins, a member of New York state’s Green Party. Hawkins has run for elected office more than 20 times and has lost every race, including the race for Syracuse city auditor this past week. Other positions he has run for include governor of New York, mayor of Syracuse and Syracuse Common Council. Hawkins has left-wing roots in anti-Vietnam war protests and the Peace and Freedom Party. Even though he has lost many times, Hawkins said his primary goal when running for office is to raise issues, not necessarily to win.

 

Raury

Eclectic hip-hop artist Raury graced the Schine Underground stage on Wednesday for the final Bandersnatch concert of the semester. He made the performance personal by talking to the audience and sharing his connection to his songs. He showcased his genre range throughout the night and lifted the crowd up with his passion and energy. His opening act, Demo Taped, played through technical difficulties to a quiet crowd, but once he admitted he was nervous the crowd relaxed a bit. Check out the best pictures from the night here.

 

Men’s soccer win

Men’s soccer advanced past the first round of the ACC tournament on Tuesday when they defeated North Carolina State. The game ended with the Orange up 2-0 from a free kick by Julian Buescher and a kick into the top right corner by Chris Nanco. The team has lost despite early leads in the past, so solidifying the second goal was important. The goal also broke Nanco’s six-week scoring drought. Freshman Andreas Jenssen also stepped up to the play by starting for injured Korab Syla. The team heads to Chapel Hill, North Carolina next to play North Carolina this Sunday.

Climate change

Canadian journalist and climate activist Naomi Klein spoke at the final University Lecture of the semester this week. She discussed her fears and hopes for the future of the Earth. While she said she enjoyed the warm weather Syracuse experienced this week, she said it was not natural. She cites capitalism as a major cause for concern and said consumers need to turn away from corporations that harm the environment. She advised students that every action taken to help is important, no matter how small.

 

Crying over Adele

Music columnist Isha Damle pointed out the hard truth this week: everyone is crying buckets over Adele’s latest hit, “Hello.” Damle said the song has its pros and cons, however. The “powerhouse quality” is more intense than ever, she said, but it seems like just another sad song from “21.” Damle said she hopes to hear more “19”-era Adele on her upcoming album, where she had more whimsy and variety. In an ideal world, Damle said, “25” will be a mix of the style of “19” and the mature vocals of “21.”

 

Basketball ranking

The Orange did not receive a single vote in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll. It is the first season since 2009-10 that the team hasn’t been ranked. Eight other teams in the ACC received votes, with four placing. On a better note, SU women’s basketball ranked 23rd in the women’s AP preseason poll, an all-time high for the program. They were ranked fifth in the ACC coaches’ preseason poll.
