Syracuse University canceled on-campus classes Friday due to severe weather conditions. It’s the fifth class cancelation in the university’s history.

The university is operating on a “limited status,” according to an SU News release. Only essential employees such as campus safety and food services personnel are required to come to campus Friday. Faculty, administrative and office staff are not required to report to their jobs.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for central New York from Thursday night to Friday night. Heavy snow, high winds and freezing rain are expected. SU announced that classes were canceled in weather alerts sent via text and email.

Essential student buildings and facilities will remain open Friday, including residential dining halls, Bird Library and the Barnes Center at The Arch. Online classes will continue as scheduled.

SU last cancelled all classes due to severe weather Dec. 1. Previously, the university last canceled a full day of classes in March 2018.

Though the university rarely cancels classes due to weather, students should exercise caution when deciding to travel to and from SU during sever weather conditions, according to the release.
