Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating a bias incident where a student reported hearing someone use a racial slur in a neighboring apartment on South Campus on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

DPS has since met with the student who reported the incident and the resident of the apartment where the slur was allegedly heard, according to a Friday afternoon DPS release. DPS did not state if a suspect has been identified or determined to be affiliated with SU.

“We hold our community members and any visitors to our campus to high standards and expect that they will conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful of others,” Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president, said in the release. “I appreciate the reporting party’s decision to come to us with this information so our team can work towards a resolution.”

DPS has also referred the incident to SU’s Office of Community Standards for further review, according to the release. Stone encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact the department.

DPS can be reached through its Silent Witness tool or the Orange Safe app. To report a bias incident, visit the STOP Bias website, or contact DPS at (315) 443-3514 or stopbias@syr.edu.
