Syracuse guard J.J. Starling is out indefinitely with a broken left hand, Voice of the Orange Matt Park revealed on X Tuesday. SU disclosed on X that the junior guard suffered the injury at practice on Monday and will miss its game versus No. 3 Tennessee Tuesday.

Starling, who transferred to Syracuse from Notre Dame ahead of last season, is the program’s leading scorer six games into 2024. He’s averaged a career-high 19.8 points per game while shooting 46.8% from the field. Additionally, Starling has averaged 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest.

In Starling’s absence, freshman Elijah Moore will likely start in the backcourt alongside Hofstra transfer Jaquan Carlos. Junior guard Kyle Cuffe Jr. played a season-high six minutes last week against Cornell and should see an increased role going forward.

Park also hinted Chance Westry might make his long-awaited SU debut against the Volunteers. Westry transferred to Syracuse from Auburn ahead of last season, but he hasn’t appeared in a game with the Orange due to injury. A former four-star recruit, Westry averaged 2.5 points per game while playing 9.3 minutes across 11 games with the Tigers in 2022-23.
